Enigma Weekend Edition: Poetry by Ermine Jacques

"It Was the First Day"
by Ermine Jacques

It was the first day
We were sad
For there would be no
                long summer nights
But curiosity and a bit of happiness
                filled the air
10th graders!
Walking into English
we knew it would be tough
But when we were given Homework
the crowd echoed “HUH”
      Mr. Fisher
A father, A Fighter; a teacher
Most of all
A guy who’s not afraid
to say up ‘til 4
doing nothing more
than grading a ton of essays
From Montag
to Abby
to scout
Mr. Fisher is always there
to make sure we don’t pout
and if we do,
he’ll hit us with a spin move
or maybe two
