Pioneers Run Past Barons, Clinch Section Crown

Image
It felt as if it was only a matter of time.  Over the past 40 days, the Pioneers have played 15 basketball games. They haven’t lost any of them. Starting with the first league game against Manheim Central back in Lampeter, and now to a cold January night at Doe Run Elementary School in Manheim, the Pioneers are Section 3 champions. Luka Vranich in the first matchup vs Manheim Central (Logan Thompson) The Pioneers had leading scorer and 2020-21 all-state selection, Ty Burton, out with an ankle injury, not that it seemed to matter. After one quarter of play, L-S had built a 17-2 lead. The lead grew to 31-10 by halftime, and Burton’s replacement in the starting lineup, Luke Hines, was tied as the game’s leading scorer. The Barons had one silver lining, going on a 9-0 run at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the home crowd, it was more than a little bit too late. At the final buzzer, the Pioneers were up 62-39. Ben Wert and Trey Grube shared honors as the game’s leadin

Pioneers Remain Unbeaten, Downs ELCO 71-49

Every time the Pioneers take the floor, it feels as if the baskets get just a little bit bigger. L-S is 2nd in the league in points scored, behind only the Crimson Tide of Columbia (who are also unbeaten). Every Pioneer on the court can and will drain a three-pointer given any sort of separation.  It wasn’t any different Friday night against Section 4 leaders ELCO, as the Pioneers knocked down 13 shots from beyond the arc. Seven of those came from ‘23 forward Ben Wert, who made the first six 3s he shot.  Wert has 200 points scored on the year, good enough for 2nd on the Pioneer roster. He’s scored at least 15 points in six out of eight recent games for the Section 3 leaders. “It makes it a lot easier knowing that I’m going to be able to be open and get my opportunities,” said Wert in regards to his hot hand.  Another storyline of the contest was how the Pioneers were going to be able to defend Corey Attivo, ELCO’s 6-foot-7 center. Attivo came out of the gates hot, but was limited to ju

Pioneers Dominate Eagles on Remembrance Night

Image
It’s safe to say Lampeter-Strasburg is the powerhouse in Section 3. They’d won five straight section titles from 2016 to 2020, until Cocalico ended the reign last year. The Eagles defeated the Pioneers twice, winning 45-43 at home and 49-43 in Lampeter.  The Pioneers have steamrolled through the competition in the early season, earning an 8-0 record and is ranked the 4th best 5A team in the state by Trib HSSN. The Eagles have had a rough go to start the season, entering Wednesday’s game with a 3-5 record.  The game itself was never even close to competitive, with the Pioneers shooting lights out from the get-go and playing strong defense. The story of the game was the ones who were no longer with us. Prior to the game, Jim “Pops” Anderson was honored. Pops was a diehard Pioneer fan, hardly ever missing a baseball, football, or basketball game. Most of the time, he also had a scorebook in hand. At halftime, 2018 graduate and 1000 point scorer Ryan Smith was honored. Smith died in Marc

Berryman Coaches Pioneers to 100th victory, Wert Scores 26

Image
After sixteen years at the school and six as the head coach, Ed Berryman has won his 100th game as the Pioneer skipper. Berryman took the job following the 2015-16 season, replacing John Achille. Since then, he’s won six section titles, the program’s only league title, and reached the state playoffs three times. I wasn’t able to talk to Coach Berryman with all of the post-game festivities, but he seemed happy with his accomplishment. Neither team came out of the gate fast on Monday evening in West Lampeter. The Pioneers steadily built their lead, sparked by a pair of thunderous blocks by Ben Wert. The first one was swatted to the wall of the gymnasium, and the second was ripped out of the hands of the opposing player.  Wert was no slouch on the offensive end either, scoring a career and game high of 26 points. 9 of those points came from beyond the arc, and 5 came from the free-throw line. In response to his star performance, Wert added “My team found me. Some shots dropped, so that’s
