Next Friday, the high school PTO will be holding their annual Mr. Pioneer contest in the Lampeter-Strasburg High School Performing Arts Center at 7:30 pm.

Meet the Mr. Pioneer Contestants

Grant Davis
Interact Club
Grant Davis representing the Interact Club

Grant Davis will be the Interact Club representative for the Mr. Pioneer contest. He is co-president of Interact, Public Relations Director of NHS, and is a member of Student Council. He was the manager for the section champions boy’s soccer team and is a member of the tennis team. He is excited to be in the contest because he thinks it will be fun and wants to represent the Interact Club and its spirit of community service well. Next year, Grant plans to attend the Pittsburgh Katz School of Business.

Other contestants for Mr. Pioneer include Grant Davis representing the Interact Club, Jack Drummond representing the National Honor Society, Nate Ferrari representing Student Council, Steven Hollern for Varsity Club, Andrew Lines for the L-S Thespian Society, Will McClintock representing Mr. Adrian Baker’s Homeroom, Aron Possler for the Tri-M Music Honor Society, Conner Shelton representing Madrigals, and Jordan Williard for the Model UN.   

If crowned Mr. Pioneer, the recipient will receive breakfast for their homeroom, plus a portion of their votes will be donated to the club or homeroom he represents. Also up for grabs is the Spirit Award. That person wins donuts for his club or homeroom.

Tickets are $5 and will be sold at the door and at lunch the week of the event.

Announcement of 1st & 2nd Runner-ups, then crowning of the 2017 Mr. Pioneer.

In addition to judging, friends and family may vote for their favorite contestant. One dollar equals one vote.

All proceeds benefit Spring Blast for 9th & 10th grade students, plus Post Prom for all prom attendees, plus any 11th or 12th grade student. Spring Blast is from 7-9:30 pm, Post Prom is 10 pm-2 am. Both events are held on Saturday, May 13.

The 2016 Mr. Pioneer contestants (from tehe left): Teddy Mazaheri, Chaz Wolf, second runner-up Ben Rhoades, Kevin Reed, winner Chase Pirozzi, Andrew Hay, first runner-up George Grau, Sam Welk, Tyler Thomas, and Justin Burkett.

Last year's Chase Pirozzi was crowned Mr. Pioneer last night in the contest sponsored by the high school PTO. Pirozzi, who represented student council, took the prize while George Grau, who represented outdoor club, and Ben Rhoades, who represented Pioneer Interact, took first and second runner-up respectively.

I recently finished reading  Rumble Fish  written by S.E. (Susan Eloise) Hinton and published in 1975. The book starts with Rusty-James on a beach and he runs into an old friend of his that he hadn’t seen in years, Steve. That’s when he flashes back to everything he and Steve had done and been through when they were kids. Rusty-James’ memory is all messed up, and he barely ever remembered much from his childhood, but seeing Steve made everything come back to him… and that was probably for the worst. Most of the book is from Rusty-James’ point of view (in a flashback) when he was fourteen years old. He was the toughest kid in his neighborhood… besides his brother, the Motorcycle Boy, of course. Advice: How to get straight As

Achieving straight As, or an unweighted GPA of 4.0, is the goal of many high school students. Getting straight As involves a lot of hard work, but it isn't impossible. Here is how I believe you can get all As. Do your homework. The number of students who do not do their homework shocks me. But doing your homework has many benefits and will help keep your grades up. Those five points you receive for a homework check matter, and when you get a 0 out of 5, it matters even more. Doing your homework also helps you learn the information, raising your test and quiz grades as well. Don't procrastinate. Procrastination is the downfall of many high school students who are capable of good grades. When you receive an assignment, do it ASAP. And when you are given the date of a test, start studying immediately instead of waiting and then cramming the night before. Book Review: Read the story of 14-year-old 'Tex' an aimless, trouble-prone youth

Book Review Before school started, I went to Barnes & Noble to get a few books from my favorite author, S.E. (Susan Eloise) Hinton, to read as the year started. I got That was Then This is Now , Rumble Fish , (a third copy of) The Outsiders , and Tex .  I had already read The Outsiders at least nine times, I had finished That was Then This is Now , and I had just finished Rumble Fish , so I decided to pick up Tex and start reading. The author of these books writes them in the only way I can ever read books.
