Image
On Thursday night, the Pioneer volleyball team traveled to Wyomissing for the first round of the District III playoffs. The Pioneers entered the playoffs with a record of 8-8, earning the 14th seed. The Saints were dominant in the regular season, finishing with a record of 17-1 and sweeping nearly every opponent.  Emily Mullin in Game vs Solanco (Logan Thompson) The first set was non-competitive, with the Saints maintaining momentum throughout the set while the Pioneers were unable to tally more than one point at a time. The Saints ran away with the set, 25-8. The second set was back-and-forth, with neither team able to grab the lead early on in the set. The turning point in the set was a four-point serving run by Kate Barbon. The Saints never looked back, winning the set 13-25.  The third set was somewhat competitive, but the Pioneers never had enough firepower to compete with the Saints. Berks Catholic won the set 13-25 and won the match 3-0. Emily Mullin and Chloe Nolt each had thre

Pioneers Run Over Mounts, Win 63-7

Old-fashioned smash-mouth football. Nine minutes into a huge Section 3 matchup against the Ephrata Mountaineers, the Pioneers were up 35-0. Four of the Pioneer scores came from the running game, with Berkeley Wagner and Gio Malatesta taking turns punching it into the endzone. The other came immediately after the latter Malatesta touchdown, with Jackson Heeter recovering a fumble on the kickoff in the Mountaineer endzone.  Many high-school football games are won in the trenches. This was certainly one of them. “It was all about the offensive line. The offensive line came out strong, we were really well prepared for this game” said lead back Gio Malatesta following the game. Malatesta finished with 3 touchdowns and 67 yards on 10 carries.  Ten different Pioneers carried the ball for a total of 365 yards and seven touchdowns. Andre Weidman tallied the only score for the Mounts late in the second quarter. The Pioneers won the game 63-7. The Pioneers host Lebanon next week for their final r

Seniors Dominate, Win Powder Puff 30-0

Image
On Thursday night, the annual Powder Puff game was held. No game was held last year due to the pandemic, meaning that both the Junior and Senior teams were going in inexperienced. With the homecoming king being crowned at halftime, the stage was set for an amazing night. The Seniors started off fast, with Jenna Daveler and Molly Bucher breaking off touchdown runs in the first quarter to give the elders a 14 point advantage. In the second quarter, Daveler found a wide-open Maggie Visniski, who made a man miss on her way to an 87-yard touchdown reception. Towards the end of the half, the Juniors finally looked like they had a chance to score. However, the clock ran out, and the Seniors went into the break with a 22-0 lead.  Out of eight possible candidates, Nick del Grande was selected as homecoming king. The other candidates were Isaiah Parido, Chad Royer, Bennett Stoltzfus, Payton Cunningham, Owen Filson, Andrew Reidenbaugh, and Grant Beiler. The homecoming queen was crowned at the hal

“They kind of punched us in the mouth” Seven minutes into the game, the Pioneers were on early upset alert to the 2-4 Spartans. Garden Spot QB Tristin Sadowski broke off a huge scramble for a touchdown, and four-and-a-half star kicker Walker Martin boomed a 42 yarder through the uprights.  The punting game was the root of the trouble for the Pioneers. Out of the first three punts, two went for less than 20 yards and the other was blocked and returned for a touchdown.  Just as the realization of the possible upset set in, the Pioneers flipped the game right around. With 8 minutes left in the half, Berkeley Wagner dropped back and evaded an army of Spartans charging towards him to find a wide-open Beau Heyser in the corner of the endzone. Both Giovanni Malatesta and Heyser found the endzone in the remainder of the half, with the latter being another one of his signature leaping grabs.  Head coach Victor Ridenour was proud of how his team responded in the face of danger. “They did a gre
