Volleyball: Pioneers Take Down Golden Mules 3-0
On Wednesday night, the Pioneer volleyball team took the short trip down to Quarryville for a battle with the Golden Mules. The Pioneers entered the matchup with a 1-1 record, shutting out Lebanon and falling to Garden Spot. The Mules were also 1-1, defeating Cocalico but losing to Lebanon. The Pioneers were without two of their better players in Emily Mullin and Anya Myers, presenting a tough challenge for the team.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 6-2 lead thanks to a serving run from Jenna Hoover in the first set. From there, neither team was able to gain significant momentum until Hoover went on another run to bring the Pioneers within 4 points of winning the set. Once the Pioneers brought it to set point, the Mules went on a spirited run but fell just short, losing the set 25-22.
The second set was less competitive, with the Mules unable to get on any kind of run until late in the set. With the Pioneers on the doorstep of the set win, the Mules went on another run but were too far behind to make their opponents lose any sleep. The set ended with a 25-17 score.
The third set started off competitive, but the better team became evident after serving runs from Chloe Nolt and Hannah Williams. The Pioneers won the set 25-16, also clinching the match win.
"I'm proud of the way the girls played together as a team. We're down two of our big players, but we pulled together, and girls were playing in spots that they didn't normally play in, and they all played well." Coach Mullin said following the match.
The Pioneers will hope to be back at full strength Thursday night at Manheim Central. Also, on Thursday, the Golden Mules will travel to Ephrata for another Section 2 matchup.
