Boys' Lacrosse: Pioneers Win Backyard Bash Over Comets

On Friday night, the boys' lacrosse team hosted the Penn Manor Comets. Both teams entered the game with a record of 9-3. Going into the game, the Pioneers were ranked 6th in the 2A District III power rankings, while the Comets were 8th in the 3A ranking. The game doubled as the annual Backyard Bash, which honors the late Ryan "Whitey" Weitzel who passed away after a battle with cancer in 2008.

Roughly midway through the first quarter of play, Stewart McClain and Barrett Denlinger fired in a pair of goals to give the Pioneers the first points of the game and an early lead. The Comets quickly recovered, evening the score after goals from Clayton Hollinger and Dylan Keene. With 43 seconds remaining, Connor Nolt gave the Pioneers a 2-3 edge off an assist from McClain. That lead would hold for the remainder of the first quarter.

It was all business for the Pioneers early in the second quarter, as a quick strike from Nolt and a goal off the faceoff from Denlinger gave L-S a 3 point lead. The Pioneer domination continued, outscoring the Comets 7-2 during the quarter. The Pioneers entered halftime up 10-4. Belmont Abbey commit Connor Nolt was the leading scorer of the first half, scoring 4 goals.

The third quarter was a barn-burner, with 11 goals being scored between the two teams. The Comets scored 4 unanswered to start the quarter, cutting the Pioneer lead to just 2. The Pioneers got some of their lead back thanks to goals from Nolt, Colin Sullivan, and Jack Filius. The Pioneers entered the final 12 minutes of play with a 5 goal lead.

The fourth quarter was equally exciting. Full of big hits and narrowly missed shots, the Comets were never going to go down without a fight. After a quick pair of goals by Nolt and Denlinger, Clayton Hollinger almost single-handedly brought the Comets back into the game, down by just 2 goals with 1 minute remaining. Their efforts were simply not enough, as the Pioneers prevailed by a final score of 16-14.

The Pioneers move to 10-3, and will host Lancaster Catholic/Country Day on Monday afternoon. The Comets will head back home to host Conrad Weiser Saturday morning.
