Field Hockey: Blantz Stars as Pioneers Move to 2-0

On a chilly and wet Saturday morning in West Lampeter, the reigning L-L league champion Pioneer field hockey team took on the Donegal Indians. The Pioneers controlled possession throughout most of the first quarter. Daisy Frank opened scoring for the Pioneers after a wonderful pass from sophomore Rowan Kimmel. Donegal leveled the score after a breakaway run from Emma Miller. University of Delaware signee Chloe Blantz scored her first of 4 goals on the day as time expired in the first quarter.

Rowan Kimmel put the first point on the board in the second quarter after her shot deflected off a Donegal defender. Donegal defender Victoria Burton was handed a card after shoving a Pioneer attacker to the ground. Chloe Blantz added another goal to her tally on a penalty stroke after a foul by the Indians. The score at the end of the first half was Pioneers 4, Indians 1.

The Pioneers used the 3rd quarter to pull away from the Indians. A strike from Tori Heiserman put L-S up by 4, then Chloe Blantz scored a pair of goals to put the Pioneers up by 5. Donegal's Makayla Ober also scored a goal in the quarter.

The 4th quarter was mainly uneventful, as both sides took advantage of the scoreline and gave the substitutes some playing time. The final score was L-S 7, Donegal 2. The Pioneers will head to Ephrata Monday night to take on the Mountaineers, while the Indians will also be in action on Monday at Elizabethtown. Best wishes to Donegal player Madison Leety, who left the game after being struck in the side of the head with a ball early in the second half.
