L-S FFA president competes for state fair queen title
The Garden Spot FFA President, Megan Mellinger, was elected as 2017 West Lampeter Fair Queen in September. Since then she has been involved in numerous activities including the state fair queen competition. On January 19, Megan competed in the Pennsylvania State Fair Queen competition.
She competed against 58 other contestants for the title of PA State Fair Queen. Each candidate had to give a speech about their fair. The 3-5 minute speeches promoted each candidates fair and the special activities and features that make their fair different from others.

Megan did an excellent job promoting the West Lampeter Fair. She highlighted that the West Lampeter Fair focuses more on promoting agriculture in the community and bringing people together year after year. Megan stated that “my fair has since grown from its original 4 page premium book to now almost a 300 page premium book. It’s a promised tradition agriculture and fun to its attendees”.
She shared some of the favorite activities and features for all ages such as the greased pig chase, the baby parade, tractor and other exhibits, animals, and of course the food. Most importantly Megan explained the real reason people come back to the fair year after year. She emphasizes “there is no better place to catch up with those people that you haven’t seen in a while, or since last year at the fair. Tradition is important to my town. Missing all three days of the West Lampeter Community Fair is somewhat of a crime in my town”.
Megan showed that the West Lampeter Fair brings our community together and continues provided education about agriculture.
The state competition not only allows candidates to share about their fairs but to also learn about other fairs and the people involved in them. It provides chances to meet to people and make new friends. Megan said reconnected with people and made new friends that she was to hang out with again.
