FFA competes in Career Development Events

What do most students to do on their day off? Sleep in late, binge watch their favorite shows, hang out with friends?

Well, not these FFA members. Sophomores Jared Risser and Tobias Leaman and juniors Bella Eckert and Cayden Heiselman, accompanied by their FFA advisor, Mrs. Holly Oberholtzer, traveled to the Lebanon Valley Expo Center on November 6 to compete in FFA Career Development Events (CDE’s) that they have been practicing for during the past couple weeks.

Land Evaluation CDE: Jared Risser and Cayden Heiselman
Jared, Tobias, and Cayden competed in the Land Evaluation CDE. They needed to determine the slope, soil texture, and land use for three different plots of land. Individually they placed: Jared - 1st place in the County and the Region, Tobias - 3rd place in the County and the Region, and Cayden - 4th place in the County and the Region.

Bella competed in the Milk and Quality Products CDE. She completed a multiple choice test on the dairy industry and a problem solving exam. Bella also evaluated different off-flavors of milk, identified characteristics in cheeses, determined fat content in dairy and nondairy products, and tested milk for mastitis. She placed 12th overall and 1st in the County.

These FFA members will continue to practice for their CDE’s with the hope of competing at State’s in June 2018. Jared and Bella will attend the Lancaster County FFA Banquet in May to receive their award.

Congratulations on a job well done and good luck at State’s.
