651 days ago the Pioneers were at Lubrano Park fighting for what would have been the program's third PIAA title. They haven't played a competitive game since. After a very long wait, the Pioneers have finally begun their Section 3/L-L League title defense. Despite the near 50 MPH wind gusts, it felt like a beautiful day for baseball. Derek Brynildsen started on the bump for the visiting Berks Catholic Saints, while senior Caleb Guyer was handed the ball for the Pioneers. Caleb Guyer in Scrimmage vs Cocalico (Jon Klein) The Pioneers struck first, with Andrew Whitehead scoring on a ground ball hit by Owen Fikkert in the bottom of the second inning. Guyer had his best stuff going, striking out 9 batters in 4 innings of work. The Saints were unable to enter the hit column until the fourth inning, when Russell Emrich hit a ground ball up the middle for a single. It revolves around a troupe of traveling performers that consider how to build a community. To do this they reenact several biblical parables with a contemporary view. The music is by Stephen Schwartz of Wicked and Pippin fame. The show begins fun and funny, but it becomes more serious in tone as it looks at the sacrifices that must be made to create and sustain faith, love, and community. The baseball season is in full swing. The twenty-two time section champs entered the week with a record of 2-1, defeating Berks Catholic and Twin Valley while suffering a tough loss to Conestoga Valley. On the weekly slate for the Pioneers was three Section 2 matchups, including rival Solanco. Pioneers Huddle Prior To Scrimmage vs Cocalico (Jon Klein) To start off the busy week, the Pioneers hosted the visiting Lebanon Cedars. The Cedars were 0-3 prior to the matchup. Xander Getchis and Jose Porte started the game for their respective teams. Getchis performed well, giving up only one run and two hits over four innings on the bump. Giovanni Malatesta starred offensively, recording two hits and three RBIs as the Pioneers won the game by a score of 12-1 in five innings. The mercy-rule theme continued on Wednesday, defeating Elizabethtown 11-0 in 5 innings.
