Weekend Edition: Sonnet by Joey Shiffer

Sonnet by Joey Shiffer

And no one at all looks up anymore
We’ve lost who we are, put our hopes at bay
Drowning, consumed, our dreams thrown to the shore
I don’t think we were made to die this way.
All these voices, voices flooding our ears
Occupied but denied the chance to breathe
We have been sleepwalking for years and years
It seems a spell we have been underneath.
When will we wake from this transcending sleep?
Perhaps when we decide to look above
We have to wake up if we wish to keep
Our passions, our lives, our regrets, our love.
And no one at all looks up anymore
Perhaps if we did, our veils would be torn.
