VAR Disallowed Hong Linh Ha Tinh Goal: Daniel Floro, Van Hau, and the “Law 11 Trap”

At the 36th minute of the match at Hang Day Stadium, the ball found the back of Cong An Ha Noi (CAHN)'s net. Hong Linh Ha Tinh players started to celebrate, but referee Nguyen Manh Hai did not point to the centre circle. After a VAR review, he disallowed the goal. Players were stunned, and fans were confused. Why was a seemingly legal goal ruled out? The situation came from a Hong Linh Ha Tinh pass into the CAHN box. When the pass was played, two foreign players – Daniel Floro da Silva and Charles Atshimene – were in an offside position. Trong Hoang, who received the ball and scored, had started from an onside position. VAR did not focus on Trong Hoang. VAR focused on Daniel Floro. According to the sequence, Floro, in an offside position, stood directly in front of CAHN left-back Doan Van Hau. As the ball was played forward, Van Hau wanted to drop back and block the shooting lane. Floro blocked his path. Floro did not touch the ball, but he prevented Van Hau from moving toward the play. That split second allowed Trong Hoang to finish. Law 11 of the Laws of the Game does not require a player to touch the ball to commit an offside offence. A player in an offside position is penalised if they become involved in active play by interfering with an opponent. This includes preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by obstructing their line of movement or vision. Floro never touched the ball, but he affected Van Hau's ability to defend. That is a clear offside offence. A former national assistant referee explained this to Tuoi Tre newspaper. He said many fans only looked at scorer Trong Hoang, but the referee's decision was based on another action. He stressed that Floro's offside position caused Van Hau to stop his run. Whether the ball touched Floro or not was irrelevant. The blind spot in this controversy is that the crowd focused on the scorer and on Charles Atshimene, another offside player. But VAR only needed to identify one offside player interfering with one defender. Van Hau is a Vietnam national team player, but that did not give him privilege. His name made the interference even more visible. Having followed many V.League matches, I believe the real issue is not the referee's decision. The decision fits the law. The issue is that VAR works in silence. Fans cannot hear the conversation between the referee and the VAR team. They only watch a goal being erased after a long pause. Without official explanation, rumours take over. Some social media users immediately accused CAHN of receiving special treatment because of its police background. Those rumours have no evidence, but they survive because of poor transparency. The lesson VAR should teach the V.League is about communication. In the Premier League, fans can hear recorded audio between the referee and VAR. In several European leagues, screens display phrases like “OFFSIDE – INTERFERING WITH AN OPPONENT”. At Hang Day, fans only saw the referee run to the monitor and then wave his hand. The law was clear. Daniel Floro stood offside and interfered with Van Hau. The disallowed goal was correct. But stopping there means the V.League misses an opportunity to teach fans the rules. An official video explanation could have cooled the anger. Silence will only feed the next round of controversy.
